CVI Optics was founded in 1972 as Technical Optics and since 2000 has grown five-fold. We at CVI have a unique skills base in the Isle of Man and 50% of our staff have been here 10 years or longer. All our management have a technical background.
We specialise in Laser Optics and Etalons and a current application for our technology is on the Phoenix Mars Lander's LIDAR (Laser Induced Detection And Ranging) System. This is designed to recognise chemical elements that are in the Martian atmosphere. All our processes are controlled in-house, including coating, which maximises the unique quality of our product.
We produce Space-Grade optics of the highest quality, which also has benefits for the semi-conductor industry.
We work closely with our customers to establish what they want to achieve with our optics. An example of an unusual, but critical, use for our lasers was for the Vatican to clean Michelangelo frescos in the Pope's private chapel.
We are confident about our future and that of the Isle of Man in space. The Island can provide both experience and craftsmanship and, while the more typical financial framework of International Financial Centres is highly competitive, the Isle of Man's huge advantage is that it is home to companies contributing directly to the advancement of the Space Industry.
In the Isle of Man we can rightly say we are a serious player in Space.
